Whoa! SPY drops 2% overnight! Did bears take back control? Trade ideas for Jan 27, 2025
What happened to the market? SPY, QQQ, MSFT, NVDA and more all red. I'll discuss this and how I plan to profit in today's blog.
Good morning traders !
It’s mornings like these that I’m glad my break and butter isn’t swing trading. I thought after Davos speech market wanted more upside, but I’m also glad I don’t typically look to swing at highs and take profit there consistently.
That said, I’m excited about today. I already scalped a short in premarketfor almost 100% gain. I alerted to THT PRO members I was taking SPX 5950p for 9.50. and took profits on 70% at 16 and now riding runners. They are currently 19 and my goal is 20-24 for 90% and leave 10% with stops at entry in case we really dump!
Generally speaking It’s mission accomplished for me and I can call it a day, but I’m not going to do that. Days like this = massive opportunity.
So what happened? Why the sudden drop. It could be the tarriffs at Columbia which tells the market Trump is not just bark. It could be DeepSeek throwing Ai spending into question. Bottom line, as technical traders IT DOES NOT MATTER to us.
Once SPY broke 606.80 overnight that meant go short. now each support is being sliced through. Recognizing it I was already able to position and join in premarket.. Now I’m looking for this to get oversold and provide a dip buy opportunity.
These monster drops are often followed by monster rallies. We get to make money both ways!
Overall there is strong potential of DeepSeek triggering a market repricing event. Let’s see how market shakes out next couple of days.
Friday Highlights
SPY - pushed 610s and failed (missed 611 goal) and then flushed to 607 and held 606.80
NVDA - failed breakout reversal at 149 sold off all day to 142s
NFLX - Failed follow through at 990 and dumped back to 960
Monday Premarket Highlights
Bloodbath in the market with large drops across the board and especially in chips
SPY 0.00%↑ - Monster gap down and flush into 590.
NVDA 0.00%↑ - Dropped all the way to 123s and now around 128
AVGO 0.00%↑ - Dipped all the way to 208-210
META 0.00%↑ - all theywa back to 605 support after almost hitting 650 on Friday.
Do you see a theme? Basically AI stocks are getting repriced.

Education - How to Join a Strong Trend
The process I typically follow for joining a strong trend are as follows:
All day grinder: join on dips to 20ma
Multi-day grinder:
Join either on support test of morning lows/failed breakdown reversal
Join at vwap mid day or end of day
Keep it simple. Don’t chase, wait for support levels for great risk/reward entries!
Education - Systematic Profit Taking
How do I take profits? I keep it relatively simple. Depending on the entry and range to the next levels I typically with take profits 50-100% of my profits at 3-10R and then raise stops to above entry with a goal of letting runners take me to the next level or 2 and to then reload if I believe we are consolidating before the next leg.
I then repeat the same process on the reload.
Let me know in the comments if you have questions or would like to see examples, I’ll share them.
Trade Ideas - Plan for Mon Jan 27
Stick to process. The process and trade setups I teach works. Rinse and repeat over and over again. There will be losses. Any good system will have them. Being systematic also means the gains will repeat and come again too. If you keep changing your system/process trying in an effort to never lose a trade, you will never get to where you want to go.
Ideas
Last week I talked about break of 606.80 would be downside. Who knew this much. Now the question is where does the best risk/reward trades be and will we get trend.
My default go to in this much drop is to lock for gap down reversal trades. That said, There is possibility for more downside, so we stick to process, use the levels and make bull and bear cases. If bearish, where is the best entry for a short, if bullish where is the best place for a long and where would buys start to come back in.
There is also a possibility that today is range bound as market prepares for all the news coming this week
Let’s go over the ideas.
