SPY/Market Rug Pull - How I read yesterday's action. Trade ideas for Friday May 24, 2024
SMCI failed trend for monster short. Learn Gap Up Reversal trade setups.
Good morning traders!
Yesterday’s rug pull was totally unexpected, but if you trade the process I teach, you would have been able to bank.
I caught the initial shorts, but missed the reload when I went to lunch and it took much longer than expected.
Though I didn’t trade, I will review how you can react to the price action and target and explain the logic behind it.
I’ll also cover ideas for today. Today’s big challenge is that after yesterday’s big move and today being the Friday before a long weekend, volume and range may be limited.

Tuesday’s Price Action (Education)
You don't try to make $100,000 ...You don’t start by saying, I’m going to make the biggest most profitable trade and turn $1000 into $100,000 and fix all my bad trades before.
You say, I’m going to plan and execute 1 trade as perfectly as I can today. You do that every single day, and soon you'll have a $100,000 and likely much more!
Please note all times are Eastern/New York regardless of what time zone I happen to be in.
SPY / SPX
Yesterday’s break of 531.50 came as a surprise to me. So I was focused on looking for a long which we got after 11am and the failed breakdown reversal setup.
I then went to lunch but it took much longer than expected. The key take aways from yesterday’s action are:
Premarket major level was tested, but before the open, selling began, and the gap was quickly filled.
For strong upside move 531.50 should not have broke, but once it was rejected again at lunch then the 529.50 dip buyers were put on watch.
once 529.50 broke again, all the morning dip buyers started stopped out
once 527.50 broke, all the thursday dip buyers stops triggered and we flushed perfectly to the 525.50 level.
By using the levels, one can plan and target where SPY is likely to go, and then identify great risk/reward trades.
SMCI
The gap up reversal trade setup works beautifully. First 15 minutes gave a strong push, then afterwards vwap broke. At that point one should go short targeting gap fill and possible 1-2 levels below.
Given that NVDA had a gap up on a great e/r, if buyers were to support the rally in SMCI, SMCI should not have broken 928 imho. Every push over 928 has been sold over the last 2 weeks.
This time there isn’t another news catalyst, so we got short and took 870p and 820p once 928 was rejected. Trend was established and we even got a vwap retest for a reload.
The 870p we got for 7.50. These got to $40!!
I had also chased the 820p for $2 as a yolo. This dipped to .85 and then ripped to $12 by end of day.
Trade Ideas - Plan for Friday May 24
Stick to process. The process and trade setups I teach works. Rinse and repeat over and over again. There will be losses. Any good system will have them. Being systematic also means the gains will repeat and come again too. If you keep changing your system/process trying in an effort to never lose a trade, you will never get to where you want to go.
The week has been wild. Today I’m going to focus on credit selling after the first 2 hours. I’m worried that today will not have trend after the recent large moves and the holiday weekend coming up.
Ideas
Given the recent break down, I’ll be watching market reaction to SPY 527.80 and 529.50. If 527.80 , we could be looking at a 2nd big red day to develop. if or 529.50 rejects we could end up pinned between 527.50 and 529.50.
